Best Guide to Parking in Sintra

Driving from Lisbon to Sintra with rental car - Where to park in Sintra and how to avoid traffic congestions

When planning a visit to the magnificent Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, transportation is a crucial consideration. Many travellers wonder whether they should take their own car or opt for a rental car to reach the palace. However, we strongly advise against this approach for several compelling reasons. In the following article, we will outline the factors that make driving to Pena Palace an impractical and less enjoyable option.

  1. Restricted Access: It's important to note that private vehicles are not allowed access to the road leading up to Pena Palace. This restriction is in place to ensure visitor safety and preserve the natural beauty of the surrounding area. As a result, attempting to drive to the palace will lead to disappointment and potential fines.

  2. Traffic Congestion: Sintra, particularly during peak seasons from June to September and Easter Week, experiences heavy traffic congestion. The road leading to Pena Palace becomes overwhelmed with vehicles, causing significant delays and frustration for drivers. Navigating through these congested streets can be time-consuming and diminish the overall experience of your visit.

  3. Road Closures: For security reasons or to manage the flow of visitors, local authorities occasionally close the road to Pena Palace for all traffic. These closures are unpredictable and can disrupt your plans if you rely on a private or rental car. It's always best to explore alternative transportation options to avoid disappointment.

  4. Limited Parking: Parking spaces in close proximity to Pena Palace are extremely limited. If you manage to find a parking spot, it will likely be a considerable distance away, requiring a long and strenuous uphill walk to reach the palace. This inconvenience can quickly dampen the excitement of your visit and leave you feeling exhausted before even entering the grounds.

If you arrive from Lisbon by car, then it is recommended to leave your car at one of the 6 parking locations that are conveniently distributed around Sintra City centre. Follow our Best Guide to Parking Options in Sintra - Here

In summary, taking your own car or rental car to Pena Palace in Sintra is neither feasible nor recommended. The restrictions on private traffic, heavy congestion, occasional road closures, and limited parking all contribute to a less enjoyable and more challenging experience. Instead, we recommend exploring alternative transportation options to visit Sintra Pena Palace, such as public buses or taxis, which provide convenience, ease, and an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty of Sintra. Plan your visit wisely and ensure a stress-free and memorable experience at the awe-inspiring Pena Palace.

The access to the main entrance of the Pena Palace is strictly controlled by the local traffic Police and tourists can get fined, if they use private vehicles on the roads to the Palace. This is due to safety measures. In case of an emergency the authorities need to be able to reach the top of the hill with ambulances or firefighter cars.

Another reason for the strict controls is that Pena Palace receives around 5.000 Daily visitors and there is simply no space for cars. The Palace was built as a quiet Royal Summer residence!
