Guide to Rome's Christmas Markets 2026: Location and Dates
Rome does Christmas differently. You will not find the enormous wooden market villages of Vienna or Strasbourg around every corner, but you will find something arguably more Roman: Baroque piazzas filled with lights, nativity scenes, Italian sweets, handmade gifts, roasted chestnuts, historic churches and markets that blend naturally into the city itself.
For Christmas 2026, Piazza Navona remains the central Christmas-market experience, while several smaller markets and Christmas villages are expected around the city. Not every 2026/27 date has been officially announced yet, so this guide separates established dates from events whose final programmes are still pending.

1. Piazza Navona Christmas Market

Dates: 1 December 2026 – 6 January 2027
This is the one to put at the top of your Rome Christmas itinerary.
Piazza Navona is already one of Rome's most beautiful squares, framed by Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers and spectacular Baroque architecture. At Christmas, it becomes the city's traditional Mercatino della Befana, with wooden stalls, decorations, nativity figures, toys, sweets, food, handmade gifts and festive entertainment.
The market is particularly Italian because it continues beyond Christmas Day and culminates with La Befana on 6 January, when Italy celebrates Epiphany.
The square has traditionally featured a carousel and activities for children, making it particularly lively in the evenings.

Best time to visit: Late afternoon into evening
The best way to experience it is not to treat Piazza Navona as a stand-alone attraction. Combine it with the Pantheon, Piazza della Minerva, Campo de' Fiori and the narrow streets around Via del Governo Vecchio.
2. Piazza Mazzini Christmas Village

Expected: December 2026 – 6 January 2027
Over in the Prati district, Piazza Mazzini offers a more neighbourhood-style Christmas experience.
The gardens are traditionally filled with little wooden houses arranged around the fountain, with Christmas decorations, artisan products, nativity scenes, sweets, gastronomic specialities and gift ideas.
The 2026/27 dates should be treated as pending until the new programme is published.
Where: Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, Prati
Entry: Free in previous editions
Good for: A quieter local market and combining Christmas with the Vatican and Prati area.
3. Christmas World at Villa Borghese

This is less a traditional market and more a giant Christmas attraction.
Christmas World transforms part of Villa Borghese into an immersive festive village, with illuminated installations, recreated international Christmas scenes, food experiences, entertainment, markets and family attractions.
It is one of the Christmas experiences that can continue well into January, making it useful for travellers visiting after Christmas Day.

Best for: Families, lights, photography and a full Christmas evening
4. Christmas at EUR
The EUR district traditionally hosts a larger Christmas village around Laghetto dell'EUR, with festive installations, food, children's activities and an ice rink.
The final 2026 dates and programme are still to be announced.
It is worth considering if you have already explored the historic centre and want to see a completely different side of Rome.
5. Ficus al Massimo Christmas Market
Around the Circus Maximus and Garum Museum area, Ficus al Massimo has hosted artisan Christmas markets featuring independent makers, crafts and gift ideas.
The 2026 dates have not yet been firmly published, so this is one to keep on your list rather than build your itinerary around just yet.
6. Giftland – The City of Gifts
Giftland is a more contemporary alternative to the traditional Christmas market, with vintage finds, crafts, books, prints, plants, records and unusual gift ideas.
The previous editions have taken place in the San Paolo district, making it particularly interesting for travellers who have already covered the historic centre and want somewhere more local and independent.
The exact 2026 dates are still to be announced.
7. Other Christmas Villages Around Rome
Rome's Christmas calendar extends well beyond the historic centre.
Cinecittà World traditionally creates a large Christmas programme with illuminated areas, shows, rides, Santa experiences and festive attractions.
Solara Garden Christmas Village in Casal Palocco is another unusual option, particularly if you love Christmas decorations. It is much more of a giant Christmas-decoration experience than a conventional city market.
There are also smaller neighbourhood markets and temporary artisan events, many of which are only announced closer to December.

Don't Miss Rome's Christmas Lights
One of the nicest things about Christmas in Rome is that you do not actually need to be inside a market to feel festive.
Start at Piazza del Popolo, walk down Via del Corso, continue towards Piazza di Spagna, then wander through Via dei Condotti, Via del Babuino and Via Margutta.
The main shopping streets and central piazzas are beautifully illuminated during the Christmas period, making an evening stroll one of the simplest ways to experience Rome at Christmas.
What to Do in Rome at Christmas
A Christmas trip to Rome should not be only about markets. The real pleasure is combining them with the city's food, history and nightlife.
Take a Roman Food Tour
December is an excellent time for a food walk because you can move between warm cafés, bakeries, markets and trattorias.
Look for tours covering Testaccio, Trastevere or the historic centre, with Roman classics such as supplì, pizza al taglio, pasta, porchetta, maritozzi and seasonal sweets.
Join a Walking Tour at Sunset
A late-afternoon walking tour is particularly atmospheric in winter. Start around the Pantheon or Piazza Navona, continue through the historic centre and finish around the Trevi Fountain after dark.

See an Opera or Ballet
Rome's opera season makes a wonderful Christmas-night addition to an itinerary.
The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma offers performances throughout the Christmas period, with opera, ballet and other productions at its historic venues.
For a special evening, dress up, have dinner beforehand and make the performance part of your Christmas itinerary rather than treating it as a separate activity.

Winter can actually be a lovely time for it: cooler temperatures, atmospheric streets and the chance to see neighbourhoods beyond the main tourist circuit.
Choose a tour that includes viewpoints and quieter areas rather than simply racing between the major monuments.

For something a little more glamorous, take a classic Fiat 500 tour.
The little vintage cars are particularly fun around Rome's historic streets, with routes often combining famous landmarks with neighbourhoods such as Trastevere, Testaccio and the Aventine.

One of the nicest combinations is a Christmas-light evening followed by dinner.
